Tafarn y Gloch Caerllion

Since becoming Proprietors of The Bell Inn in March 2005, we have tried to shape it as a personal idea of a traditional Welsh hostelry, but with a unique Breton twist that acknowledges the cultural, linguistic, culinary and historical kinship between the two regions. We even share the same national anthem!

Breton Flag

"Rural and remote, it is a land where ancient burial chambers and windswept moorlands contrast starkly with bustling ports and market towns. Characterised by the extensive coastline, the sea features prominently in the life and cuisine of the region. The local ports overflow with abundant catches…and the countryside provides some of the finest vegetables and dairy produce…" Written by the renowned Breton restaurateur Georges Paineau, these words of homage to his homeland could just as easily apply to Wales.

By legend, it's said that after the fateful battle of Camlan (a village, incidentally, still found in north-west Wales) Arthur of the Britons, whose mythology is closely associated with Caerleon, was taken to Ynys Enlli (Bardsey) and then onto Armorica, as Brittany was known in antiquity.

The Bell's innovative and tasty menus boast Welsh and Breton influences and are complemented by a carefully-chosen list of wines, cask ales and artisan ciders. We believe we host the largest range of the latter in any British pub - again reflecting the often-overlooked but rich heritage of Welsh and Breton cider-making. Virtually all of our ingredients are sourced from across Wales, including grass-fed beef which is hung for at least 21 days. Our enthusiastic and dedicated kitchen brigade is led by recent Wales Chef of the Year finalist Jonathan Fryer.

We all very much hope you enjoy The Bell's hospitality and your suggestions and comments are always welcome. The road to success is, after all, never entirely complete!

Iechyd da…or Yec'hed mat as they say in Brittany!
